The Department of Criminal Sciences of the University of Parma (UNIPR) - Parma, Italy

The Department of Criminal Sciences of the University of Parma is committed to high-quality teaching and research in the area of criminal law, procedure, evidence, criminology and forensic sciences. The Department is engaged in both undergraduate and post-graduate education in relation to criminal sciences. The Department has 13 academic members (2 Full Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 9 Lecturers) and a number of associates for research and teaching purposes. Research in the Department focuses around key themes in which the Department has some Italian leading researchers. These themes are: sexual offences, terrorism, Human Rights and criminal justice, negotiated justice, juvenile trials and comparative criminal law and procedure. The Department organises international events such as the Advanced Summer Seminar on European criminal policy, open to U.S. Law Professors and practitioners

The Department of Criminal Sciences will provide a legal approach to policy assessment and will lead the consortium’s investigation of country-based contextual data (WP5). It will also contribute to the review of need (WP2), the conceptualisation of new indicators (WP3) and the dissemination of the results of the EUROJUSTIS project (WP7) to the academic community of jurists and criminologists, in the light of its extensive contacts and partnerships in Europe and elsewhere. The following personnel will be involved:

Alberto Cadoppi, Director of the Department is Professor of Criminal law at the University of Parma and a leading Italian scholar in criminal law. Prof. Cadoppi is co-author of an acclaimed textbook of Criminal law and several publications on comparative criminal matters, in national and international journals. His current research interests are in the field of sexual offences, morals and the criminal law, codification and sentencing policies.

Merzagora Betsos Isabella, Professor of criminology at the State University of Milan, is expert in criminology and associate of the Department. She is author of more than 50 publications (books and journal articles) on criminological matters, and more specifically on murder, domestic violence, and crime fear. Since 2006 she is also an Italian government consultant on juvenile crimes.

Stefano Maffei (Ph.D. Oxford), Lecturer in Criminal Procedure, is an expert in comparative criminal procedure and evidence. Dr. Maffei is author of several publications in International Journals (Journal of International Criminal Justice, European Journal of Criminology) and a book on “The European Right to confrontation in criminal proceedings”.

Chiara Scivoletto (Ph.D. Bari) Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology of Law, is an expert in juvenile justice, criminology and social policy. She is author of several publications on various matters such as probation, crime fear and mediation in juvenile trials.
