The Centre for Criminological Research, University of Sheffield (USFD) - Sheffield, UK

The University of Sheffield has over 20 years of active criminological experience. The Centre for Criminological Research brings together an internationally renowned body of researchers from different departments, and is amongst the leaders of criminological research in the UK and Europe. Research streams include international, comparative work on victimology, desistance; research on youth justice; studies the informal economy, business and crime; and environmental criminology. The Centre for Criminological Research has 9 Professors, 6 Senior Lecturers/Readers, 14 Lecturers, as well as other research and teaching staff. Recent research at the CCR has been funded by: the EU - including comparative research on CCTV, as well as Marie Curie Training Site Fellowships in criminology at Sheffield; the European Science Foundation - including research on the informal economy; the Economic and Social Research Council - including a major longitudinal study of desistance from crime, part of an international network (SCOPIC) which includes North American and European; UK government departments (Home Office, Dept for Constitutional Affairs, the Dept of Health and the UK Office of the Deputy Prime Minister).

USFD will lead and co-ordinate WP4, devoted to the development of attitudinal survey based indicators of confidence in justice. It will also contribute to WP2, WP6 and dissemination (WP7). The following personnel will be involved.

Joanna Shapland (Ph. D. Cantab.) is Professor of Criminology and Director of the Centre for Criminological Research and a world-renown criminologist. Her past research has included research into the fear of crime and policing. Joanna is currently the Editor of the International Journal of Victimology.

Stephen Farrall (D.Phil, Oxford) is Reader in Criminology at USFD (starting date of appointment: Autumn 2007). His research interests include the measurement of the fear of crime using survey methodologies and the analysis of the resulting data in terms of indicators of social and economic change.

Natasha Semmens (Ph.D., Sheffield) has been a member of Centre for Criminological Research since 2001. She is experienced in survey design and has co-ordinated several national and international surveys. She has published in the fields of research methods and fear of crime.
