EURO-JUSTIS FP7
217311 EURO-JUSTIS - Scientific Indicators of Confidence in Justice Tools for Policy Assessment

WP3 Eurojustis Methodology

start date month 7 – closing date month 16

WP LEADER: CNRS

WP3 aims to provide the theoretical foundations – the “roadmap” – to guide the development of new and improved social indicators of public confidence that allow for the understanding of national peculiarities and for productive comparisons across the EU. WP3 will clarify and define the concepts that drive the indicators which will be developed by WP4 and WP5.

Where countries have made progress in developing indicators relating to confidence in justice, they have tended to lack specificity – both in identifying differences in ratings of confidence of different institutions and in paying insufficient attention to local contexts. In WP3 we would be aiming to devise an approach that is closely coupled to the policies and operation of criminal justice agencies.

The following task will be implemented in WP3:

Task 3.1: Set of guidelines/specification for WP4

This task will set out, at a conceptual level, what the basket of survey-based attitudinal indicators should measure, and define the strategies to achieve accurate measures in a cross-national European context.

Task 3.2: Set of guidelines/specification for WP5

This task will set out, at a conceptual level, what set of Country-based contextual data (eg Human rights record of Member States, domestic mass-media coverage of criminal incidents, criminal trends, crime statistics, etc.) should be collected and define the strategies to ensure corss-national uniformity in the collected measures.

Task 3.3: Conceptualization of effective and clear presentation of indicators

This task involves finding the best tools for presenting complex concepts and numerical indicators in ways that will engage the imaginations of non-specialists – for example using graphical-based tools such as spider-grams, diagrams and similar.
